It's especially effective in the technique that he mentioned when just fading to character night-colors when going in and out of shadows... always looked rich and full. I don't think I've ever read a kind word about him. And he sure doesn't come across as a likeable guy on that Waking Sleeping Beauty documentary. I guess it's no wonder he was fired eventually too.
