Good News For New Year's Eve!

I'm a tad premature on this, but good news comes to animation industry folks from across the fruited plain (and other points in the country). In 2007, three pure animated features landed in the Top Ten at the American box office:

Grosses -----------> Movies

$336,530,303 ------> Spider-Man 3 (2007)

$320,706,665 -------> Shrek the Third (2007)

$319,014,499 --------> Transformers (2007)

$309,404,152 --------> Pirates of the Caribbean 3 (2007)

$292,000,866 --------> Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007)

$227,137,090 ---------> The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)

$206,435,493 ----------> Ratatouille (2007)

$183,121,527 -----------> The Simpsons Movie (2007)

$168,213,584 -----------> Wild Hogs (2007)

$148,734,225 -----------> Knocked Up (2007)

So. Shrek places second, the sadly disappointing* Ratatouille comes in seventh, and the hand-drawn Simpsons Movie takes the eighth spot.

And of course the host of partially animated films, small items like Spider Man 3, Transformers, Pirates of the Caribbean and Harry Potter do quite well in their own right.

The reason it's always good to harp on these numbers is, when animation does well, more people in the animation business get employed. For some reason or other, I find that's very important.

Spider-Man 3 was half and half with me and Pirates 3 disappointed me as well but part 2 was so good, I don't know what went wrong.

Understand that I'm not talking aesthetics here but only box office.

Because box office is what triggers more employment.

That's interesting that there are only 3 traditional (non-fantasy/effects) live action movies in the top 10 (Bourne, Hogs and Knocked).

Well, Knocked Up was a bit of a fantasy.

I'd love to know what people saw in "Wild Hogs" that kept them going to the theater. I saw it on DVD and consider it a waste of my Netflix subscription...

Steve, let the Jim Hill Ratatouille debate die already...you sound like one of these star struck "Pixies", which I assume you're not. By the way, domestically he really wasn't that far off. So, maybe a New Years resolution? Just sayin'...Happy New Year! Bob

The final tally is even better news (job-wise) with Alvin and the Chipmunks singing to the tune of $153,632,443 as of Jan 1, knocking Knocked Up out it's #10 spot.

I'm not sure what people saw in a lot of these top 10 movies but you can bet that with the cash cow sequel formula there will be more singing 'munks down the road.
