Weekend Box Office Take

New entries starring Adam Sandler and John Travolta in a wig and fat suit knock old favorites farther down the box office list.

Ratatouille comes in at #5 for Friday...

...as Brad Bird's second Pixar film collects $3,440,000 and I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry reaps a robust $12,400,000. Hairspray chalks up $11,200,000.

Harry Potter -- perhaps propelled by the media frenzy for the final book in the series -- collects $10,125,000.

In third place, Michael Bay and his giant robots have to make do with $5,980,00 (and a $248,444,000 total.)

Update: Weekend totals end up about where one would have expected them to end up...

The new "Adam Sandler Movie" lands at #1, just like every other "Adam Sandler Movie" of the last eight years. (Note that movies with Adam Sandler in them but aren't "Adam Sandler Movies" (tm) often don't land at #1). A $34,775,000 total. Sandler is the one movie star who is critic proof.

Harry Potter drops 58% to #2, collects $32,185,000 (a total of $207.5 million).

Hairspray racks up $27.8 million.

Transformers takes in $20.5 million after a 44.6% decline. The big robots now stand just under $263 million.

Ratatouille drops 39%, collects $11 million, now stands at $165.2 million. My bet is it crosses $200 million threshhold.

Adam Sandler, tearing-up the Box Office playing a "gay man"...and Travolta in a wig and party dress, right behind him. Interesting weekend. That in mind, how do we think "Rat" is trending, now?

it'll be lucky to hit 200.

'Rat' is still by far the best movie of the summer. sadly todays public school generations are in the majority of low story appreciation, but have a need for mindless eye candy so they dont have to think.

2 cents

RE: "2 cents" That's a bit of a stretch...we can't blame teachers and schools because five year olds need more "set pieces" in their Saturday afternoon movie going experience. Pixar is simply making films that reflect who they are now...they have older kids, and their films are aging accordingly. Happens all the time with film makers. Pixar's problem is that everyone is watching them quite closely...literally, banking on them.

Jim Hill can now bit the Rats A$...

uhhh bite

Not sure what Jim Hill has to do with this article...isn't he a local sports caster? Oh, maybe he predicted "Rat" would make just under two hundred million...but, wait, isn't that what it's pretty much on track to take-in? Perhaps you should deal with specific points in the article...then we can all enjoy your witty posts.

JH mentioned it wouldn't earn more than the lowest grossing Pixar movie. It passed that mark.

Yeah, JH is so off the mark. It's made all of 2 million more than Bug's Life so far. How could he have been so wrong!!
At this point it won't even get within spitting distance of Monster's Inc. It might not even see Madagascar numbers.

Jim Hill is pretty good at calling the numbers. Rat is a great film and it just wasn't appreciated as much as it should have been. But I dont know why there is always so much stir about Jim Hill.

The real negativity about JH is because he doesn't seem to recognize Roy as the herald and John as the messiah and Ed as Paul.
That allergorical enough for ya.?
He actually will say negative things about Pixar. The Blasphemy!!!
