Coming from nowhere a few weeks and months ago ("What? Another monkey picture?"), the monkey picture triumphs.
Exceeding all expectations, 20th Century Fox’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes was on course to gross $18 million on Friday in a sizeable start for the origins pic.
The opening day performance means the movie -- headlining Andy Serkis as the ape Casesar -- should open in the mid $40 million range at the domestic box office, successfully relaunching the classic sci-fi franchise. ...
Here in late summer, the box office list is filled with two kinds of movies: Character comedies of various descriptions (raunchy, less raunchy) or action/fantasy features with budgets of various sizes. And every last one of them driven by c.g.i. animation.

Moviegoers continued to flock to 20th Century Fox's Rise of the Planet of the Apes on Saturday, guaranteeing a better-than-expected opening of $53 million at the domestic box office.
Add On: No doubt about it, the monkey picture roams far beyond Fox's original expectations.
... The big-budget film received surprisingly strong reviews, earning an 81% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and went over well with crowds this weekend. Those who saw the movie assigned it an average grade of A-, according to market research firm CinemaScore. (Men made up 54% of the audience.) ...

I think what's truly amazing is that this was not heavily promoted. Most everyone I know didn't even know it was being made, much less that it actually came out this weekend. People likes the monkeys...
Actually, it WAS very heavily promoted. Lots of TV ads, radio ads, satellite radio ads, lots of internet presence, and Franco making the talk show rounds.
It's REALLY fun--not the greatest movie of all time, b ut certainly the best film of the summer by a long shot.
Actually it WASN'T compaired to the competition.

Just saw the film earlier today. Really enjoyed it. The special effects for the apes were amazing. What I really loved about the film is that they treated the monkeys as the true stars. The monkey's actors were even named before big stars like James Francoin the credits.

But were the animators...? Oh, that's right...I'm sure no animators were used just as they weren't used in Avatar or LotR
If TAG wants to have a cause it might be to try and protect animators from not getting the credit they deserve - sort of how the Writer's Guild arbitrates credits
Note that Cars2 and the Winnie the Pooh film have both fallen out of the top 10. The Pooh film in only its third weekend.
Cars 2 has the worst 'legs' of any animated feature in a long time. With an opening weekend of $66 million, it should have gone on to something like $230-250 million, and it won't even make $190 at the rate it's fading. And unlike other animated features, it's not doing much better overseas, either.
Kung Fu Panda 2 legs are even worse
Not true at all. Cars 2 will end up grossing (domestically) about 2.9 times it's opening weekend. This is amazingly low for an animated feature.
KFP 2 will end up grossing about 3.6 times it's opening weekend, which is typical for a successful animated feature.
On the worldwide grosses, it's an even bigger mismatch. But keep drinking the Kool Aide.
