Protectionism!

These folks need to learn the glories of free trade.

China is opposed to importing a large number of foreign cartoons because the move would hinder its domestic animation industry, said a senior official with the country's top TV and film watchdog.

The purpose of introducing foreign cartoons is to learn from their strengths, such as creativity and technique, said Jin Delong, director of the publicity and administration department of the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television (SARFT). But importing too many will hamper the development of Chinese animation, he said.

I'm sorry, but these people aren't going to get anywhere if they behave like 19th-century Republicans*. Because owning a trillion dollars of our bonds might not be enough. They'll need to open their borders and ports to the bracing winds of international commerce.

* 1857 -- Democrats lowered tariffs further. An economic panic hit soon thereafter, precipitating a fall-off in imports in the wake of the recession that followed. Government revenues plummeted by 30 percent. In response, the nascent Republican Party called for higher tariffs ...

Hi there, Steve :)

I am a new TAG member (2009) working my way through reading this forum, and just wanted to let you know that I for one really appreciate these kind of informative news bites about our industry that I would otherwise probably never even hear about. Thanks for these kind of posts!

Oddly a coincidence but it seems everyone is eluding to a much larger trade war coming.

What do you expect from corporate communism? "free trade" means giving HUGE tax breaks to send jobs overseas, providing massive tax loopholes so that any profits don't flow back into the U.S. economy, then having to deal with constituants who've lost their jobs due to this "protectionism." Protectionism, of course, meaning for corporations.

The bush economic debacle appears to be far worse than either shrub or President Obama's administrations have let on. The 8 years of bush and dick are going to take a LONG time to undo.

Obama will be out by 2012. The Democrats will be out of power after November. Hopefully the Repubs can get us out of this mess. It'll be their hour, for sure, their last chance for credibility. God help us.

Hopefully repubs can get us out of this mess? The booming stock market of the Bush years?

Seriously? Did you just get here?

Ummm, can our (US) animation industry STOP sending our jobs overseas? There's too many people at my youthful age ain't learning about the biz when ALL the work is going to Asia and India...and the US schools aint teaching animation and right way. I see too many overseas animators producing crappy animation.

WE produced too much crappy animation in order to make it cheaper. That is how this all began. What we need is for our state legistlatures to give good tax breaks to the studios here who keep it IN THE COUNTY WHERE THE STUDIO ORIGINATES. But nooooo.....

When I hear guys like Anon 8:35, I don't know whether to laugh or shake my head in pity. Keep up the partisanism - it's exactly what your conservative heroes want from you as they screw you over.

China argues every day that they already have and we argue they haven't. You can go around with this all you want, but it won't change that we borrow what they have and they lend what we need. Reverse that and you have a case. Until then, they will speak and you and your grandchildren will like what they say. Their claim on our labor is explicitly spelled out with our national debt. This is Econ 101.

Remember--glen beck is a member of a far fringe right religious organization, an alcoholic, who doesn't have a high school diploma--and a former morning weather radio dj. That's it. And he lies--a lot. This is where a whole lot of idiots get their information. It's sad, really.

That said, he makes the ignorant sarah palin look positively VILE.

Sarah Palin IS vile. And we can thank McCain for his lack of being able to choose someone with character, rather than A character.
