Puss in Boots, bubbling at a low simmer underneath the top tier, now has $140.2 million in its domestic knapsack.

Add On: The Reporter gives us the bad news (as do some commenters):

New Year's Eve' Leads Worst Weekend Since 2008 With $13.7 Million. Jonah Hill starrer "The Sitter" comes in second with $10 million; weekend is down 15 percent from last year as a nervous Hollywood prepares for a make-or-break Christmas.

Yeowch.

Looks like it's official now: the Muppets has tanked.

Unfortunately, looks like Arthur Christmas has too. Pity, it's a great movie.

I wouldn't say that Muppets has tanked (though I can't understand the hype over it. It was good but no more than a 'three star' film. Just my opinion.)

The disappointing performances of both Arthur Christmas and Happy Feet 2, however, had me rejoicing. Being a traditional animation fan, I sense that America is FINALLY over the mentality where "It's CG, therefore it's gotta be good and make tons of money!"

Bring back traditional animation. Somebody.

Me, I don't care if an animated film is in 2D or CG, as long as it's GOOD.

And Arthur Christmas is good.

And I just read that, after 4 weeks, it's now risen to the top of the box office in Great Britain. That's quite a feat.

Muppets, Hugo, and Arthur Christmas are all fighting for the same audience. Any one of them would do better if there wasn't so much competition.

Make a movie the public really wants to see, and it doesn't matter what else is out at the box office. The last two weekends have been the worst overall boxoffice weekends since 9/11 happened. People don't want to see ANY of the movies out right now. 'New Years Eve' is number one with less than $14 million? 'The Sitter' is number two with $10 million? Pathetic.

Arthur Christmas is also tanking overseas. It's only made $57 million from 63 markets, while Puss in Boots just expanded to 42 markets and is already up to $142 million. Happy Feet 2 is as anemic overseas as it is domestically ($49 million overseas so far).

How $64m+ over a $40m cost qualifies as 'Tanked' is beyond me...
