At Sony

I spent the day at Sony Pictures Animation, where a relatively small team of board artists is working on a myriad of projects. ...

Per staffers, The Smurfs 3 will have a lot more animation of small blue smurfs and a lot less live-action (a wise change given the lower returns of the last hybrid edition) ...

Adam Sandler and his team have major input into oncoming Hotel Transylvania 2. (As they did on the first. I'm informed that Adam and Genndy Tartakovsky had a robust tussle over the story direction of HT, and Mr. Sandler achieved what he wanted. But thousand-pound gorillas usually do.) Plus there are multiple notes from various levels of execs (who could ask for more?) ...

Genddy T. is also hard at work on Popeye. And remains calm, cool and collected.

Kazorn is still in development, still headed up by Kelly Asbury.

Are Sony and Aardman still working together?

SO Genndy and Adam were butting heads in terms of story?
Figures.

Ah well, at least any problems with the story can be blamed on the latter.

Doubt that. tartakovsky not exactly know for his brilliant storytelling. Of course, neither is Sandler.

I suppose so. He's been shown to be a better artist (and action scene choreographer) than a writer in the past.

That's the scuttlebutt. (Not that I traffic in scuttlebutt. ) But this has been alluded to in print interviews, so what's new?

Adam Sandler, like him or not, carries a lot of clout at Sony Pictures. When you're movies make hundreds of millions of dollars, you get to have a large say.

Genndy was the umpteenth director on HT, and brought it in under difficult conditions. And made it work. The picture made $354 million.

Give G.T. credit.
