The Other Awards

Then, of course, there was another shiny gold trophy ceremony happening.

“Stories We Tell” wins documentary award; “Breaking Bad,” “Veep” and “House of Cards” win major TV honors

Spike Jonze’s “Her” won a significant victory at the Writers Guild of America Awards on Saturday night, taking home the award for the best original screenplay of 2013 in a head-to-head battle against the same four films it will compete with for the Oscar. ...

Other awards include “Muhammad Ali’s Greatest Fight” winning for long-form television adaptation, “The Simpsons” episode “A Test Before Trying” winning for TV animation and “Days of Our Lives” winning for daytime drama. ...

I'm so old I remember when the Oscars happened at the end of March, beginning of April. And they happened (for some weird reason) at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. And there wasn't really anything else in the gold statue department. (In those ancient days, the Golden Globes were tiny, and a total joke.)

My, but how things have changed. But the quest for publicity ... and accompanying profits .. is unremitting in our corporatist age.
