At Mickey's Place

I buzzed through the hat building in the A.M., and the CGI crew is working six-day weeks on Tangled but happy to have jobs (and overtime). "We're employed, and that's good" ...

Meantime, Winnie the Pooh is in the last couple of months of animation, after which:

"A new hand-drawn project called [X] has been greenlit for development. It's the only thing on the traditional side right now, so hopefully it will stay on track ..."

Hopefully.

A story person informed me that Richard Ross, the production honcho across Riverside Drive on the Main Lot, is looking at animated projects in early development as they progress and has said: "If I don't like something at its first stages, I usually don't start liking it more after more development ..."

(Now. How true the Ross quote is, or how accurate, I cannot say. But I know it sure as hell sounds like a studio head's words. But you can judge for yourself.)

From what I hear from my friends over there - it sounds like some pretty amazing projects are in the works. They're most excited about the cg projects in the pipeline - No fairytale or princess material but all original takes! Quite the change for Disney?

Thats great to hear Rich doesnt want project to languish, I agree with that.

Only problem is, I dont trust Rich's taste. What does he know about animation?

Do you guys, think we'll have something animated for Holidays 2012?

Good Lord, save us all from Rich Ross. How many animated features were crap early in development and ended up being masterpieces?

Guess the days where the artists are in charge and the suits had little say are over at Disney. That didn't take very long now, did it.

John Lasseter launches a Disney hit, Rich Ross's input and influence will decline.

John Lasseter doesn't launch a hit, Ross will exert more control.

Simple.

You are correct, Naveen. Ross once stated he hates animation, and it'll take a lot to make him change his mind.

Hey Steve,
Is the hand-drawn project called Grangle:http://www.who.is/whois/grangle.org

Sorry.

You'll get no information from me.

No.

"If I don't like something at its first stages, I usually don't start liking it more after more development ..."

well then he must have liked a trio of projects that are currently in development and progressing forward.

You guys are making me pee my pants in anxiety.

I would like will be VELVETEEN RABBIT or RAMAYANA.

Andy Harkness said he returned in deep to KING OF THE ELVES in 3D (but no still greenlight) and other in 2D.

Also in the short THE BALLAD OF NESSIE in 2D for the next spring with WINNIR THE POOH cinemas release, ilustrating a book for Nessie, so.

I would like:
2011 - WINNIE THE POOH
2013 - REBOOT RALPH (aka JOE JUMP)
201? - VELVETEEN RABBIT or MY PEOPLES. Rural US.
201? - RAMAYANA
201? - KING OF THE ELVES
201? - FRAIDY CAT. An animal story
201? - DON QUIXOTE
2020 - SNOW QUEEN. a WOMAN story since RAPUNZEL/TANGLED in a decade.

All this project are man/man animal story.

I can't wait until Mr. Tra la la, hippity hop is finally shown the door. He needs to be working in Vegas, managing drag queens and female impersonators. His taste runs to tacky with sequins.

No lie, he's clueless, and shouldn't be allowed anywhere near the animation dept.

One of the best things about the success of Despicable Me is that now Disney has yet another competitor. And the only thing that's going to save it is not bean-counters, but ARTISTS.

Maybe we should start up "Save Disney" again...

I hope something "is in the works"and original for this studio's future, artistically.

Winnie the pooh- is fun but it's nothing unexpected, it's safe...familiar territory.

Ballard of Nessie- a cute continuation return to shorts.

Joe Jump has been bounced around for ages as has Fraidy Cat,and Snow Queen. Don Quixote even longer (60 yrs!).

So much of the production art from My Peoples has been seen by the public it's almost like we have seen the film without the film ever being released.

Ok-ing development is along way off green lighting a film, although I do wish Disney the best and am cheering for them!

Snegurochka - you're really way off with your release schedule! You have no clue what's going on there.

Anonymous said...

There's cool stuff in the works people...

But it's all under wraps, as always...

Is this new hand-drawn feature, one of the ideas Musker-Clements were pitching to Lasseter?

Anonymous said...

Are the rumors about two new CGI flicks from Disney, the one to be directed by Chris Williams and the other by Chris Buck (who was to be Snow Queen's director before it got cancelled) at all true?

Perhaps one of these two will be directing Reboot Ralph?

"I can't wait until Mr. Tra la la, hippity hop is finally shown the door. He needs to be working in Vegas, managing drag queens and female impersonators. His taste runs to tacky with sequins."

Homophobic much?

""Snegurochka - you're really way off with your release schedule! You have no clue what's going on there.""

I think that was just their wish-list of films to be released. how they would like to see it handled. not to be taken literally.

I'm happy to hear a new Hand Drawn film has been given the green light. I wonder what it might be and if they can squeeze it into the 2012 release calendar.

Fingers crossed that Ross will keep his hands off the creative process.

Steve Hulett said...

To repeat: Hand-drawn development has been okayed.

No production has been green-lit because they're not close to that point yet.

And we'll be good here and not talk about what, exactly, it is. Yes?

Anonymous said...

No.

Anonymous said...

Yes.

Anonymous said...

Maybe.

Anonymous said...

@Steve Hulett: Couldn't you at least tell us some very general things? You can't drop such a bomb on us and give us nothing!

e.g. 1) Is this a Musker-Clements feature?

2) Will it be a musical?

3) Will it be an "animal" or a "human" movie?

Now, that's not too much to ask, is it?

Anonymous said...

Yes.

Anonymous said...

What part of "in development" vs. "greenlit" do you fans not understand ?

"In development" doesn't mean the movie will ever get made. And no one can talk specifically about what's in development, so stop asking. If anyone does talk about it you can be pretty sure they're not actually working at the studio, so take their opinions with a grain of salt.

" Ross once stated he hates animation, and it'll take a lot to make him change his mind."

Wow, that makes so much sense to put him in charge of Animation if he hates animation. What a morale booster that must be to the folks at the studio. A company built on animation , with deep roots still in animation , but he hates animation. Where else but in our industry ? (would anyone in their right mind appoint someone who hates animals to be head of the SPCA ? Someone who hates baseball to be the commissioner of baseball for the MLB ? Fill in your own example ... )

Steve Hulett said...

I CAN reveal that what's being developed is a hand-drawn film in the style of cartooning that we all enjoyed as kids.

"Pinocchio"

"Aladdin"

Flims like that.

Okay? Now, stop asking because my head will otherwise explode.

Ross wants a movie about King Triton’s castle... weird.

" Ross once stated he hates animation, and it'll take a lot to make him change his mind."

Can you let me know where you read this statement? I would like to read it for myself -

"Wow, that makes so much sense to put him in charge of Animation if he hates animation."

I understand he reports to him - but, isn't John Lasseter in charge of animation?

Anonymous said...

HAHAHAA!! Nice.

Anonymous said...

Lasster doesn't report to Ross. He reports to Iger. That's the deal they announced.

Anonymous said...

Ross is in charge of Walt Disney's entire movie devision. Touchstone, Pixar, Disney Animation etc. Some have a shorter leash then others. but he is the one to report to.

General Confusion said...

Ross is not the one Lasseter reports to. He does have say and John listens to any studio chief, but he makes the decisions and he reports ONLY to Iger. It's part of the deal when Pixar was bought by Disney. in fact, if the film doesn't go over 100 million he has final approval. Anything over that will require Iger's approval, not Ross'.

I've heard that the new project is "Jack and the Beanstalk"

I checked the name grangle.org and it now redirects to ABC Family's official site.
On the same week the domain was registered, this was:http://whois.domaintools.com/collegepartymonster.org

And THAT domain, for something called College Party Monster, doesn't redirect to ANYTHING right now. Hint hint.
