"Girls Drawin' Girls" presents "Sugar & Spice," an art show celebrating the release of their third volume of collected pin-up art titled "Girls Drawin Girls: Sugar & Spice, Volume III."

The evening will feature original pin-up artwork on display and for sale, burlesque performances by the ladies of Victory Variety Hour, figure drawing models provided by Gallery Girls, and tunes by DJ Marlowe. Refreshments will be provided. A $5 donation is requested at the door to help go towards the evenings' performers.

Artwork on display will feature pin-up pieces from Volume III, as well as original artwork by some of the most talented ladies working in animation, film and graphic design today!

In addition to copies of "Girls Drawin Girls: Sugar & Spice, Vol III" being sold, Girls Drawin Girls will be selling their past books, "Girls Drawin Girls; A Girl in Time, Vol I" and "Once Upon a Girl, Vol II," art prints and other pin-up themed merchandise.

About Girls Drawin Girls:

Girls Drawin Girls was founded in 2006 by Simpsons veteran Melody Severns and storyboard artist Anne Walker as a way to showcase women artists working in the male-dominated industry of animation. Together, they felt it was time for these talented women to demonstrate their creative abilities and artistic interpretations of female sexuality by re-defining the art of the pin-up.

Since its conception, the group has published three volumes of pin-up art and grown to over 90 active members who work professionally in various entertainment industries.

The group provides collaborative projects for its artists (such as book collections, group art shows, and opportunities to participate in charity art events such as the Pasadena Chalk Festival), in addition to promoting each member's individual artistic endeavors through cross-promotion and marketing prints, original artwork and other art-related merchandise.

About Gallery 839:

Gallery 839 is overseen by The Animation Guild (TAG 839). Located in the Union's office headquarters building, Gallery 839 focuses on the work of artists in the animation industry, highlighting their fine art backgrounds apart from their day-to-day jobs in animation.

Gallery 839 hosts monthly shows of TAG members' personal art, with a gala opening reception the first or second Friday of each month. The main goal for these shows is to help give TAG members a venue to show their personal artistry. The talent of the Animation Guild's membership runs deep and wide, and the purpose of Gallery 839 is to share that talent with both the membership and the rest of the community.

I wish the Girls Drawin Girls poster was less Little Annie Fanny. Surely female artists have something more positive and less demeaning to say about women? I have no idea what is on display at the show, but I'll keep my fingers crossed that there will be something more rewarding and insightful that truly represents Girls Drawing Girls.

And that poster looks like you could get arrested for having it in your possession.

Yeah, it's creepy. Unless you're a paedophile in which case it is probably FREAKIN' AWESOME!!!!

I knew too many men in this business were emotionally stunted 14-year-old boys at heart...but the women, too? A great idea for a show, derailed right out of the gate by that ridiculous poster. Disappointing.

So doing pinups and having an art show to display them is OK only if the boys do the art?

Either you're all hypocrites or wayyyyyyyy too uptight about women and art for your own good.

Well, that poster looks like someone molested Shirley Temple. But if that is your "thing" dude, enjoy.

The point is, that there is no shortage of male animation artists producing cheesy, demeaning images of women. There are male animation artists doing different, exciting kinds of work too, but my point is that there is A LOT of this stuff produced by the guys. So I'd hope that when the women of animation did a show it might push past the male stereotypes and perhaps reflect a little of what it means to draw women from a woman's perspective. Just to provide balance. Maybe the show provides that balance and the poster is misleading. I'd hope so.

On a related note, Vons is having a sale on Kleenex.

I don't recall Shirley Temple having a rear end like that...maybe you know something we don't, Anon 4:09?

Why are pinups demeaning to women? Drawing a nekkid cartoon woman in a cute pose doesn't mean that the artist thinks that all women should be running around without clothes on striking cute poses.

Just because a woman artist wants to produce artwork that's of the cheesecake variety doesn't mean she's kowtowing to a male stereotype of women. Maybe she just likes pinups. I've met some of the GirlsDrawinGirls artists, and they don't need dudes telling them what do draw. They seem to enjoy their art and enjoy being women, and I think that attitude shows through their work.

As for the poster advertising the show, the worst I can say about it is the use of too many different types of fonts used in the type. The artwork on the poster is cute, and I'm surprised anyone would seriously take offense to it.

No...its just girl drawing girls the way that guys like to see them. Its the flipside of typical heterosexism we have engrained in our WASP-ish society. How about some boys drawn like this from boys? Lead the way girls! Show them how its done, and you could be considered the true trailblazers in what is to come: such as Superbowl Ads that show fraternizing gay parties. College dudes in skivies! Hoooyah!

oy, you readers need to get not get your knickers so in a bunch, seriously.

The girl in the flyer is our mascot and logo, Gigi, and the flyer was designed by one of our very talented artists. I, for one, think she did a lovely job.

Also, the $5 -suggested- donation goes towards the models from Gallery Girls and VVH Burlesque Dancers, because we like to be able to pay them some amount for coming out and performing. Pay what you can, nobody's gonna force you.

Seriously, reading these comments just makes me roll my eyes. Come out to a fun art show, enjoy some pin-up art, and get over your pretensions already!

What makes a woman drawn by a woman different in approach? Do women artists not emphasize what's beautiful about a woman's physique, such as eyes, breasts, legs, and buttocks? If so, then when did that memo go out, 'cause I didn't receive it.

As for the second half of that post...I don't even get it. Are you saying that women who draw women in a "hetero" way(whatever the hell that means, and I'd love an explanation of what the hell you're talking about) are secretly gay? And does that mean that gay women don't like the same physical features that men like on women?

I'm baffled.

So Elvgren and Vargas are okay drawing sexy women, worshipped for their talent and execution, but the moment a girl draws another girl, it's sexist? Please explain that to me.

Anonymous said...

This is just silly. The fact that people think it's controversial for women to have an opinion about their own sexuality, gay or straight, is exactly why GirlsDrawinGirls should exist.

David Avallone said...

I'm confused to hear that images of beautiful women are somehow, by their very existence, demeaning. Men and women have been making art out of female beauty for the entire run of human civilization. If you believe there's something inherently negative about any and all images of attractive women... I humbly suggest the viewer is bringing that into the gallery in their own troubled brain-pan.

You're the snickering 13 year old boy in health class, and maybe when you grow up and look with adult eyes, you could see these things for the light, harmless whimsy they are.

There's all sorts of important, terrible things out there in the world just waiting for your courageous, anonymous, self-righteous declarations of moral superiority. Why don't you find some and let the grown-ups have a good time hurting nobody and looking at pretty pictures?

what's wrong with girls drawing girls the way guys like to see them? some women aren't anti man. get over yourself ffs.

"Surely female artists have something more positive and less demeaning to say about women?"

Like women are sexy and amazing in all shapes and sizes and you should totally come down to the 839 Gallery show to see the work of talented female artists in animation and illustration who created this group to offer some female perspective in pin-up art, namely that we are not all shrinking violets and wussy wallflowers and have instead chosen to define sexuality on their terms with passion and humor and pride because this isn't political or demeaning it's just fun?

$5 to add to all the animation guild does nothing with. The Animation Guild is practically an insurance provider. It's common that Animation Artists are working 10-14 hour days without overtime at union shops because the union has no balls.

Anonymous said...

It was mentioned in a previous comment, the $5 does not go to the union, it's a suggested donation to the entertainment that will be provided that night. So, it's all good. No reason for butt hurt.

Uh. TAG gets nothing of the $5. Just to put your mind at ease.

Not to drag this on too much further, but I believe the origianl complaint wasn't over female artists drawing sexy females, but to anyone - ESPECIALLY FEMALE ARTISTS - drawing what appears to be a little girl with a somewhat mature body in a sexually provocative way.

I don't think it's cool when Chris Sanders and other men do it and I don't think it's cool when women do it.

Why do management trolls and Animation Nation wannabes continue to post here? Don't they realize they're so obvious that we all instantly ignore them?

I thought we were all artists here and understood things like exaggerated art styles. Yes, Gigi's proportions aren't normal but that doesn't necessarily make her 'childlike' either. Her proportions are similar to Betty Boop and no one complains that Betty looks too much like a kid and appeals to pedos.

Personally, I love the poster and it makes me laugh every time I see it. <3 And I don't think I'm being degrading to women at all by getting joy from it.

Anonymous said...

Whether or not you think this character looks like a little girl is a matter of opinion, and not a fact. You are entitled to your opinion, just like everyone else.

Um, who is the union? ...but a group of artists. No it's Anonymous that has no balls.

I'm ordering a copy from GDG! ;)

I think the silent majority and anyone without a dried up vagina appreciates sexy girl drawings.

THIS.

Listen, this is like the bullshit stereotype that you can't wear makeup or look traditionally femme & be a feminist. The whole point is we get to dress, look, and DRAW ourselves the way WE want to.

Then by all means avert your eyes.

so hasn't anyone ever heard of "chibi" or "SD" characters in anime? Just enjoy it cause it's a CUTE form of an adult character not an actual child. GET IT? it's CUTE. end of story.
ugh.. American culture is so sensitive.

as for boys drawing sexy boys , by all means they should if their hearts desire. But i think we can all agree that MOST girls, even if not in an artistic way, appreciate the female body for its beauty NOT in a sexual way.
As a female artist that draws sexy women, I can TELL you I don't get all tingly and horny when I'm drawing! this is ridiculous! It's a way for me to express sexuality in myself without posing for playboy and disappointment my family! These pin ups ARE NOT REAL PEOPLE, they have not lost ANY DIGNITY!

ALL is GOOD. don't worry.

Jeremy C. Joseph said...

Jeez. Lighten up. All IS good and I just ordered a copy, which I shall enjoy for all its beauty and splendor the artists and the female form have to offer.

GO GDG!111!!!!one

GDG seems to attract a fair amount of controversy from the animation community whenever we are mentioned on their blogs. (Here, and also over at Cartoon Brew last summer.)

Are we demeaning ourselves by buying into the male-dominated pinup genre? Or are we sexy, sexy trailblazers, bringing the cute girl art like nobody's business?

Come to our show! Have a cupcake! Decide for yourself!

I LOVE living in the 1950's! Someone's gonna report you wimminz to HUAC ;)

High 5's all around to GDG.

I'm glad Girls Drawing Girls was so threatened by comments on a stupid webpost they needed to call for back-ups. Get over it ladies. I always thought your group was tongue in cheek and not the loud shrew you appear to be in the comments.

Also does it bother anyone that your stuff is half Freddy Moore and half suicide girls? So confusing.

Kendra Melton said...

um... I dont know what the hubbub is all about (nor do i want to) but this event sounds fun!! $5 for some figure drawing, snacks, drinks, and art; who could ask for more! Definitely going to try and make it out. :]

Anonymous, come to the show on Friday. Then you can call me a shrew to my face AND eat a cupcake at the same time! I'm the tall one with glasses; you'll find me behind the merch booth.

It's true that this girl design is the Girls Drawing Girls mascot.

What I wonder is why the mascot has to be a blonde kewpie doll with exaggerated Little Annie Fannie buttocks and breasts and especially pigtails. Even most Suicide Girls don't wear their hair in freaking pigtails.
pretty much only cartoon girl character designs do. It's an old cliche of "girly" sexiness, it IS a "daddy" kind of fantasy and it doesn't seem at all turned on its head by the GDG approaches.

Guess the point is that yes, women can so too objectify the female form just like 50 years of guys do. And hopefully take brickbats with the guys for doing so. The most important point is that SEX SELLS! books. and prints.

Ashley Cooper said...

As an artist, I LOVE it when someone who knows nothing about me, my art, or my personality tells me with all conviction and confidence what MY art means. The funny thing is that all of these baffling attacks on our group HAVE NO ACTUAL BASIS... You're all getting your panties in a wad over our FLIER! You all have no idea what is in the show or the books. So instead of trying to tell all of the artists who invested their creativity, time and love into their work that they suck because of some imagined conclusion you drew by seeing their flier, try keeping your mean comments to yourselves, your mind a little more open and DON'T GENERALIZE A GROUP OF 100 WOMEN BASED ON ONE IMAGE! That's sexist!

Anonymous said...

Dearest Ashley, I've seen your show and it is no different than if it were put on by a group of guys...although opinions may go into the area that even a guy who draws girls draws girls better than a girl draws girls. However, as you seem to think that we dont know you and in the same breath slander guys who draw girls (better) are being sexist and demeaning women, your drawing girls as a statement that you can not only draw girls as good if not better than guys has an apparent flaw. You hide behind your "we do it in the most virtuous way", which means that you claim to know us and that we DONT do it in the most virtuous way. Which happens when you say we are demeaning you. What I wonder, is: are you drawing girls the way that you do really for the reason that you know that there is nothing more that a guy likes than seeing two girls go at it with each other, and in a way, that is what you are doing by drawing girls the way that you are? If so, does it turn you on to see a guy who is turned on by a drawing he knows was done by a girl?
What it comes down to is sex and love and money. Bringing them all together is the epidemy of what a person does. God bless the hets that can pull this off. And as for you...you can blaze trails by drawing guys in such a way as guys draw girls, and then you can really, truely and finally be considered as what you do as being equal. Quit trying to blur the lines. And please unbunch yer panties.
