The Augustian Derby

Now with candy-coated Add On.

The Nikkster gives us the sad news. No animation in this weekend's Top Five:

1. The Expendables (Lionsgate) NEW [3,270 Theaters] -- Friday $13M, Estimated Weekend $33.7M

2. Eat Pray Love (Sony) NEW [3,082 Theaters] -- Friday $9.8m, Estimated Weekend $28.3M

3. The Other Guys (Sony) Week 2 [3,651 Theaters] -- Friday $5.5M (-58%), Estimated Weekend $17M

4. Scott Pilgrim v The World (Universal) NEW [2,818 Theaters] --[Friday $5.2M, Estimated Weekend $13.3M)

5. Inception (Warner Bros) Week 5 [3,120 Theaters] --Friday $3.4M (-38%), Estimated Weekend $11.3M

Remarkably enough, the most well-reviewed movie -- Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World -- turns out to have the weakest opening. Go figure.

Add On: The Mojo of Turnstiles gives us finer-tuned numbers for the Friday box office list:

1) The Expendables -- $13,250,000.

7) Despicable Me -- $2,060,000 (total: $217.3 million)

12) Toy Story 3 -- $605,000 (total: $399,207,000)

Add On Too: B.O. Mojo provides Sunday numbers that are not dissimilar to earlier projections.

The animated offerings at the top of the list, Despicable Me and Toy Story 3 have the smallest percentage drops of any movies in the Top Eleven. (Woody and Co. declined 30.6%; DM dropped 27.1%).

Actually, Scott Pilgrim has plenty of animation in it...

It's practically a moving comic.

And quite fun, I might add.

The Other Guys had ~800 more theaters than Scott Pilgrim, yet they barely took third place over Pilgrim. Pilgrim made about $1845/theater on Friday, while The Other Guys made about $1506/theater this Friday.

On a per-theater basis, Scott Pilgrim comes in third.
