I just found out that Al Wilson, veteran story artist and designer, passed away August fifth in Santa Barbara, where he'd lived for decades.
I knew Al when he joined Disney to work on The Black Cauldron. He was always a gentleman, and always a pro.
He was eighty-six at the time of his death.

I didn't believe Al when he told me he was going to retire to my home town of Santa Barbara and play golf, but retire he did.
I had the pleasure of working with Al on various projects over the years. The most memorable was probably Disney's "The Jungle Book." Like myself, Al was one of the uncredited story artists on that film.
I hope Al enjoyed those years on the links in Santa Barbara. Few animation artists can afford to live there nowadays.
Al was a character. How old was he and when did he retire? He always had that impish grin. He was an eccentric. I'm sorry to hear of his death.
Al had to be in his seventies or older. I'm just not sure.
He was a funny guy, but could get under your skin at times. He was the only guy I recall who actually made Vance Gerry angry. That takes some doing.
Al Wilson was born in September 1920 and retired in 1985. So he was eighty-six when he died.

I was present when Vance Gerry began yelling at Al. It was the only time I ever saw Vance red-faced and angry.
An amazing occurence.

What in the world was the subject of the argument?
