Congrats to Pixar - especially after all that hot air about the pic being 'unappealing' and difficult to position.

That's a mighty big drop after the DW/Pixar Top 5.

Quality is sometimes a very intangible thing, but people know it when they see it. I wish I could say the same thing for execs and wall st analyists...

I've seen UP now 4 times, and it gets better every time. Looking forward to seeing it at least once more next weekend!

Up was able to fly past the $63.1M of its studio's last entry WALL•E, although the higher ticket prices meant the audience size was a bit smaller. But a clear victory was won over this year's 3D smash Monsters vs. Aliens from rival DreamWorks Animation which bowed to $59.3M in March. Not only did Monsters benefit from higher 3D prices but it also opened wider in 338 more locations. Up now holds the record for the biggest opening for a 3D pic.

wow... Space Chimps actually beat Star Wars.

Well, it looks like the audience is solving the CG glut problem by mostly ignoring about half of the ones that are released.

Well, they tied in their opening weekends, but Star Wars outgrossed Space Chimps in the long(er) run:

Star Wars:

Domestic: $35,161,554
+ Foreign: $33,121,290
= Worldwide: $68,282,844

Space Chimps:

Domestic: $30,105,968
+ Foreign: $34,682,011%
= Worldwide: $64,787,979

Observers frequently note how suspect the opening weekend numbers seem to be ... f'rinstance, isn't it interesting that Madagascar 2 just coincidentally happened to closely inch past WALL·E's opening numbers six months after the fact?

wow... Space Chimps did almost as well as Star Wars.

I see a Star Chimp Space Wars in our future. Or maybe that's what the Ewoks were already.
