And the Two Top-Grossing Films Are ...

From Disney; with CG animation; from the studio regime of the deposed Richard Cook.

"Toy Story 3" tops the list with $1.06 billion at the box office ...mak[ing] "Toy Story 3" the highest-grossing film of the year [and] the highest-grossing animated film of all time (on an unadjusted basis). ...

With "Alice In Wonderland" pulling in $1.02 billion, No. 2 on our list, Disney is the first studio ever to have two films in a year cross the $1 billion mark. ...

Interesting that the two biggest movies are an animated sequel and a remake of an animated feature by a former Disney animation employee.

However you add it up on the big tote board, this is good news for the House of Mouse. And we can all be grateful that the unemployed Mr. Cook will have extended federal benefits to see him through some of the jobless months stretching out into the misty future.

God bless us, every one.

So do those two films make up for the flops Sorcerer's Apprentice and Prince of Persia, plus the lackluster Tangled and underperforming Tron?

Floyd Norman said...

Yes, they do.

I wouldn't call running Disney's film division the easiest job in the world.

Tangled was lackluster? Lets see, it got rave reviews, had the 2nd biggest Thanksgiving opening EVER, kills in merchandising, and has (as of today) turned a profit which most predicted would never do? Oh, and its regarded by pretty much everyone as the best CG humans ever. EVER.

Lackluster my ass. Your face is lackluster.

Tangled has not yet turned a profit--far from it. It will down the road. And Tangled merchandise is doing OK, but not gangbusters. Toy Story 3 outperformed Tangled merchandise by a lot. It's an ok kids film, though.

Tangled will start seeing a profit once it's netted ( not grossed) 500+ million.

OK, now that Disney features have enjoyed unprecedented success, they can afford to keep their animation department employed, right...right?

Oh, I'm sorry, I must have been thinking of those guys on Flower Street. My bad.

Nah, Imagineering is full up on Flower St.

"And Tangled merchandise is doing OK, but not gangbusters."

How can you possibly know this? Actual question, not being a smartass. Not that I would possibly know any better, but I can say for a fact that she's the best selling Princess in Disney World for the past month. We can't keep her on the shelves! I can't speak for all the Walmarts and whatnots, but that has to count for something.

(Tried to not come off as fanboyish. Sorry if I failed.)

"at disneyworld." That says it all.

BTW, I read the trades on toy sales. That's how.

Tangled did only OK from a merchandising point of view. With no follow up to the movie planned due to it's mild box office, I doubt it'll become evergreen on it's own--only as a part of a "princess" line, that Disney doesn't want to continue.

Wow. You know a lot more about the inner thoughts and workings of Diz Co. than I do.

You Bob Iger's nephew?

I went looking for a Tangled doll for my niece about 2 weeks before christmas at Target, and they were completely sold out, as was every last drop of everything else Tangled related.

This was in Texas.

I meant to say Rapunzel doll. Egh.

Ok one question, are you people DW employees or something?

Some people who call Tangled a hit just don't understand Hollywood arithmetic. Just because it's doing somewhat better than Princess and the Frog doesn't make it the savior of the studio.

As for me, as a viewer, Tangled was just okay. Bland songs. Meh story. Serviceable, though not particularly memorable, characters. Lion King or Beauty and the Beast it sure as hell wasn't.

So, Disney/Pixar has a great year and what to the posters on this blog do? Why trash them of course. If Disney/Pixar had a horrible year, what would the posters on this blog do? Why trash them of course.

If I ever start feeling good about the animation industry and those who work in the art form, if I ever begin to feel a spirit of community where we all celebrate each other's successes and encourage those to whom the public turned its fickle eye away from to try-try again, I head over to this blog where I am reassured that those happy thoughts that filled my foolish head were but wisps of my imagination.

Cynical, self-righteous posting written by those refusing to attach their name to their own posts with questionable, yet somehow more reliable and unbiased, sources than the last often anonymous poster.

Hardly are they ever indicative of the views shared by those in the industry in my opinion.

By and large, you can deep discount the value of Anonymous posts.

I have to disagree with you, Steve. I think, in general, someone posting anonymously will more likely give you their real opinion without fear of reprisal.
Those that use their names often have to decide how they would like their superiors, future employers, and friends, etc. take any statement they make and will often soften comments with this in mind. If they don't consider these things I feel sorry for them and their families because we all know these posts are being read by many we'd prefer didn't read them.
I'm sure even Floyd debates who will or won't take offense when he posts - as do you, I assume. But neither of you are in quite the same position as many of us...
Not to say that there aren't a lot of stupid anonymous posts made, but their are a lot of stupid non-anonymous posts made.
I see a lot of the same grumbling on these posts that I hear behind closed doors at the studios I work at - as well as much of the same cheerleading.

$500 million. That's what it will take to have Tangled break even. The film cost $260 million to make. PLUS prints and advertising. It needs to clear $500 million to break even. It's halfway there.

A good, if not great film. And it will eventuallly turn a profit. Just not much. Rosey assessments don't count when it comes to the nuts and bolts of a publicly traded company.

Say what you want about Disney or Tangled, but theres a huge difference between "hasnt turned a profit yet" and "lackluster."

I smell a bit of artistic envy from the Dreamworks posters.

"Tangled may be the prettiest CG film of all time, but...but...Dreamworks has a lot of money and hits....so THERE!"

Wah wah.

Oh and to the poster claiming to read the toy trades...care to enlighten us with which toy trade and which article? Otherwise, lies. Thanks.

Oh hey, look.

http://www.stitchkingdom.com/disney-news/movies/tangled-3d-bluray-tops-amazoncom-sales-charts-release-date/

"Although no official release date has been announced, the 4-disc edition of Disney’s Tangled is dominating the Amazon.com blu-ray sales charts in the #2 position, bested only by Inception. Across all formats, it’s also second only to Toy Story 3."

And thats just the blu-ray,not to mention all of the other hundreds of SKU's that are selling out across all the major retail outlets. And the movie isnt EVEN FUCKING OUT YET.

How does that crow taste?

This is getting ridiculous. This has been an outstanding year for the animation industry, especially with the Big Three. A little rivalry isn't bad, but please no more. Sorry had to get a little martyr.

Uhhh...where did that guy get that stuff about Tangled being the number 1 seller in Blu-Ray at Amazon? The actual sales chart says it's #47 overall: http://www.amazon.com/Tangled-Four-Disc-Combo-Blu-ray-Digital/dp/B004G6009K/ref=sr_tr_1?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1293579919&sr=1-1
