Best Picture

Probably nobody in 'toonland figured that the animated feature that would win "Best Picture" would be this one.

"Waltz with Bashir," Ari Folman's animated documentary chronicling his coming to terms with repressed memories of his experiences with the Israeli army in the 1982 Lebanon War, was named best picture of 2008 by the National Society of Film Critics ...

This time, Pixar had to settle for the runner-up position. And the white doggie? The jungle animals? Not,apparently, on this year's award roster.

Is there any truth to the rumor that Folman originally wanted to tell the story with CG penguins?

Absolutely false.

Pandas in jungle fatigues were his first inspiration.
