The Foreign Steeple Chase

Resident Evil: Dee of Three rules the international roost as it does the domestic (with Inception a competitive second), but animation continues to click along ...

... No. 4 on the weekend and picking up steam overseas is "Despicable Me," Universal's 3D animation outing voiced principally by Steve Carell. A first-place Australia opening generated $4.5 million from 264 locations, with the overall weekend take coming to $6.1 million from 1,430 venues in 29 markets. International cume stands at $81.5 million ...

Which, using my pocket calculator and Box Office Mojo, would give the Meledandri/Carrell outing a worldiwde total of $324.9 million.

Winding up a four-month foreign rollout, Pixar/Disney's "Toy Story 3" in 3D generated $5.6 million from 3,964 venues in 40 markets. Total foreign gross stands at $632.2 million, making the animation title the tenth biggest-grossing feature ever released overseas. Globally, "Toy Story 3" has amassed $1.042 billion, and on a worldwide basis is 2010's biggest hit. ...

DreamWorks Animation/Paramount's "Shrek Forever After" in 3D, $487.5 million ...

Which gives the ogre a $721 million worldwide take, more than 2/3 of that from abroad.

Off topic: so sue me......

Kevin McCarthy, who worked steadily on stage and in film for nearly seven decades, while never attaining the status of a star, died on Sept. 11 at the Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, of natural causes. He was 96.

But the actor is probably best known for two film roles. He played the lead of Miles Bennell, the family doctor in Don Siegel's low-budget 1956 sci-fi thriller "Invasion of the Body Snatchers," which became an unexpected cult classic of the genre. Two decades later, he took a cameo role in the 1978 remake of the film, in which humans are replaced by identical clones known as "pod people." And, he had a small role in the Miller-penned 1961 film "The Misfits," playing the man from which the Marilyn Monroe character has just become divorced—a man to whom Monroe says, "You're not going to make me feel sorry for you anymore."

One of my favorite actors. It was great to see him as Bennell one last time in Looney Tunes: Back in Action.
He will be missed.
