Okay, so it had a lacklustre launch stateside, but the Middle Kingdom is a whole different story:
"Astro Boy" set a new opening weekend box-office record in China for a CG-animated movie, its producers Imagi International Holdings announced.
Industry estimates indicate since opening last Friday on approximately 1,100 screens across China, "Astro Boy" has recorded $5.9 million in box-office receipts, topping the weekend box office chart and setting a new mark for the opening weekend box office of a CG-animated feature film on the Mainland.
That record was previously held by "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs," which had an opening gross of $4.4 million ...
It's more than likely that breaking records in China isn't going to push AB into Ice Age territory worldwide, but every national market helps, does it not?
I haven't seen how the picture is doing in other Asian markets, but it will probably fly higher than its sputtering liftoff in the U.S. and Canada last weekend.

I hope you're right, Steve. Astro Boy deserved a better reception than he got here in the States. I loved it. It's the most underrated movie since Bolt.
Commies love cartoons
As do the French. Same diff.
Just remember:
The Chinese are the good Commies ...
And the Cubans are the bad.
And if we keep borrowing from China to finance Obama's socialist agenda, China will OWN us someday. If they don't already.
They do already
And the French aren't "commies." They are lucky to have a communist party (they have democratic freedom in France).
Loser nixon started the banking trend with China. And our President Obama is only doing what he can to undo the shameful bush economic debacle. bush's support of Corporate Communism to rape American Taxpayers is well documented, and anyone who supports him is a Corporate Communist. How sad.
And remember, all fundementalist "christians" are, by definition, ANTI-DEMOCRATIC. They can't believe in "democracy" if THEY'RE way is the ONLY way.
Enlightened people know this is all complete bunk. Thankfully, we outnumber them.
My remark about China/Obama was said mostly in jest. Mostly. (Couldn't we all use a laugh right now?) Trust the Bush-bashers to have no sense of humor.
Communism is a system of government not a political party. It's a bit odd to say that France is lucky to have democratic freedom so they can support a "party" that would abolish democratic freedom if it could.
Communism is also a Party, with points as valid as a system of government as a Republic. As the bush and reagun years have shown, their brand of Corporate Communism (aka "me, me, me") doesn't work. It would be nice (and Democratic) if there were such a thing as a "Free Market Economy," but there isn't. big business wouldn't allow American Citizens to have it.
So much for "democracy."
Seeing as how Jesus was a communist, it should come as no surprise to anyone that fundamentalist "christians" are so anti-democratic.
The way we're forced to pay an unreasonably high income tax every year? And have no employment security at all?
