Box Office Prognostications

Forbes Magazine has the weekend grosses figured out.

Exhibitor Relations expects Saw VI will earn $27 million and top the weekend's box office ... Paranormal Activity should come in second with $22 million ... Where the Wild Things Are should rank third this weekend, ... earning $33 million at the box office ... Astro Boy ... is expected to rank fourth with $13 million ...

I'm thinking AB will do more than $13 mill, but I might be thinking wishfully.

Unfortunately, it looks like Astro Boy flopped. Made less than 2 million on opening day. Ouch!

Forbes' prognosticator sucks.

Paranormal Activity is beating Saw VI by quite a bit, and will be #1 this weekend.

Yeah, Astro Boy is flopping hard. A $65 million budget, and is estimated to only earn $7 million opening weekend. This must be very sad news for all the folks at Imagi. I hope they will nonetheless continue through with their next movie.

Wasn't "Paranormal Activity" made for something under $20,000 (yes, 20 thousand) , so even with the doctoring the studio did to get it into shape for a major theatrical release it probably cost well under half-a- million. $22 million this weekend means it is way out in front in the only place that counts: dollars of profit vs. dollars spent making the film.

The audience response to "Paranormal Activity" was simply amazing. I haven't seen an audience so silent and responsive since "Sixth Sense". Great movie!

Paranormal was a surprisingly effective movie for the first 75% of the film, then the premise just ran out of gas. Toward the end I felt sorry for the film makers. It was clear they didn't have an ending, but they sure did know how to build suspense.

Definitely not worth $10, but a good rental.

Unfortunately, AstroBoy flopped.

It was a dreadful movie. One of the worst animated movies I have seen in a while.

Yet another example of why you can't make a movie with the director and others scattered all over the world away from the production staff.

The director and main creative leadership HAVE to be on site.

Yeah, that's right. People stayed away from Astroboy because they felt the animation wouldn't be as good as Pixar's or DW's (because the director couldn't work hand in hand with the animators).

NOT!!

They stayed away because they didn't want to see a film called Astroboy right now. Maybe they would've wanted to see this movie in a month from now or maybe they would never want to see this film and Imagi made a poor decision to make it. But to assume it was because of slightly less than Pixar quailty animtion you're only fooling yourself.

Our tale starts with Dre@mw0rks. Once upon a time the mighty Dream cast out their trolls and unskilled peasants in order to grow stronger. And a rising sun from the East was foolish enough to entrust these castaways with their future crowning them as Kings and Queens…

Cecil Kramer, Maryann Garger, David Bowers, Paul Wang, Ken Tsumura, Pilar Flynn, Tim Cheung, Greg Emerson, Pepe Valenica… This is your reward - the stillbirth of Astro Boy. And it is just.
