Write Off

Wish it were otherwise.

Barton Crockett of Lazard Capital Markets now forecasts that DreamWorks Animation will report a 44 cents-per-share loss for Q4, down from his previous prediction of a 6 cent loss. Crockett says that Rise Of The Guardians likely will end up generating $110M at domestic box offices and $210M overseas vs. his previous forecast for $130M and $276M, respectively. ...

By the end of its domestic run, Guardians will have returned something around 4.3 times its opening weekend gross.

Trouble is, the opening weekend gross was tepid. Whether this was because audiences didn't respond to the subject matter and/or story, or because it was just a bad weekend to open, I know not. (I tend to think the latter, only because if word of mouth had been bad, the picture would have grossed about 3 times its opening weekend numbers over the length of its run.)

The next picture that goes into release is Chris Sanders' The Croods. In a few months time, we'll get to see how it performs.
