Which animated feature wins at tonight's Oscar fest? Methinks it will be
Rango
We'll see if I'm right.
(Since the internet connection at the casa is going slower than 90s' AOL dial-up, we'll also see if I can get online later to comment on my wondrous prediction. ...)
Add On: Not much of a surprise about the win, considering the momentum it had. Co-writer James W. Byrkit says this:
“Three years ago, it would have been the most ridiculous thing to talk about an Oscar for ‘Rango. ... We were bracing ourselves for critical dismissal, and hoping for at a least a small cult following.
The picture did passably well at the box office, and critics liked it. Early on it was the animated feature to beat, and the picture ended up with an aura of inevitability by Academy Awards time.

yep
Rango just won. Congratulations to everybody that worked on the film.
Oscar reduced to the value of a CRACKER JACK PRIZE.
It was sort of obvious that Rango was going to take the prize. A high profile live-action director was the helmer, and it had already won every other award. So ...
Big surprise.
Of course there's no way to figure it out, but if you think about the fact that most of the voters work in live-action and many of them know or would like to know Verbinski and very few of them know any of the animation directors...
...and the fact that it had picked up other awards for whatever reason then voting for Rango was almost the lazy choice....
Just one theory, at least
rango really was a crap cartoon. Badly written, animated, designed, and directed. And no, I don't work for DreamWorks.

I think you meant to write "...and no, I don't work".

He already did. And was right.

sour grapes yo! Congrats to the crew!
And thanks for a wonderful and enjoyable film!
I can't wait for all animated films to be made by shooting the entire film in live action, then reproducing it shot-by-shot, beat-by-beat in the animation!
Nice to see the Animation Community rally around and support last night winner - oh, wait - I forgot this is the 839 blog where we make ourselves feel brighter by pissing out someone's candle.
Kudos to the group up at ILM for a great looking film. It wasn't my favorite but was original in style.

Not me, bruddah. Just a bunch of anonymous keyboard commandos typing at unspecified locations.
Don't take it too seriously.

...which wasn't the case with Rango!
KFP2 and Puss get nominations = The bar has been lowered.
