It's always tough to know exactly how many people are gainfully employed in the Southern California 'toon industry at any one time...
but this graph gives a good head count regarding TAG shops.
Beyond the usual animation studios (Warner Bros., DreamWorks, Disney, Universal and all the rest), there are also animators in the game industry (Electronic Arts has a big facility on Playa Vista with hundreds of folks), artists and animators doing live action visual effects, World Wide Web animation work, commercials, etc.
Most of this work isn't reflected in the numbers in the graph, because most of it isn't covered by an Animation Guild contract. So my estimate of "animation" work -- as described above -- would be somewhere between 3500 and 6500 people in So. Cal.

I think you mean "Electronic Arts", though Electronic Carts sound like fun...
