DreamWorks Animation has had better quarters.
DreamWorks Animation profits plunged more than 70 percent in its fourth quarter to $24.3 million, or $0.29 per share, with "Shrek" spinoff "Puss in Boots" failing to living up to the box office might of its predecessors.
“Although 2011 was a very successful year for Dreamworks Animation at the box office, it did reveal some challenges for the industry as a whole,” Jeffrey Katzenberg, chief executive officer of DreamWorks Animation, said on a conference call with analysts.
Katzenberg cited the weaker than expected DVD and Blu-ray sales of "Kung Fu Panda 2" as part of the reason for the sluggish quarter. ...
It's not enough to have robust box office. When the sales of the little silver disks fall off, you have problems.

That's a tough business when one film's $532 million worldwide is "good, but not great" and making a profit of $86 million is a disappointment.
That's $43K per employee over and above all costs.

What can you say really, inflation is a bitch and so are the whinging investors & folks at the top who think they don’t make nearly enough. I'd rather see a greater percentage of those profits go to the people who made the film. Stuff like 60% is just ridiculous.

Good thing Disney isnt just an animation studio, and bring in revenue from a very diversified product and service base.
Not being snarky, being honest. If it werent for Disney Co, Disney Animation would have closed a decade ago. Its nice to see them making good animated films again though. Tangled is easily the most well-animated film Ive ever seen.
Pixar must be happy that Brad Bird's heading back to the company--especially with news like this.

I wonder why Dreamworks is waiting so damn long to make a sequel to How To Train Your Dragon - easily the best film it's ever made? You KNOW that movie will make money.
Dreamworks HAS improved, but there are still two things wrong with its movies: the writing is still kinda lowbrow, and the character designs are still lackluster. But those flaws can be overcome. I hope they are.
I think part of the problem is that all the studios are still leaning on the profits of DVD sales, unfortunately DVD's are just like VHS...they are on their way out. With 60-70% of profits now coming from outside the US why not get the films to the people faster through streaming services rather than spending so much on creating DVD's.
Also I don't think they are rushing any Dragon sequels because they are using that series for a new cartoon network show. I'm curious as to how much profit they make off of all of their spin-off those shows?

But they also have diluted themselves by getting to big too fast. Besides the aforementioned writing and design issues, this idea that they can sustain so many productions at once is folly. Especially since they don't have a fallback cushion other than JK's pockets.
Dreamworks is rancid with overbloated middle managers and so called "creative executives" Thats an oxymoron in itself.
You'll be waiting a long time if you want to see better character designs out of DW. Its just too cost efficient to keep recycling the unappealing human characters from Bee Movie, Monsters vs Aliens etc...

Well, one thing is for sure. I certainly found Tangled to be more enjoyable than both UP and WallE.

So Puss in Boots is considered a financial disappointment, but the chump-change-generating Muppet movie is deemed worthy of a sequel.
