Joe Grant's Perspective on the Animation Biz

Joe Grant has been gone for a year now, but a wise old story artist recently told me this anecdote about him... "We were at lunch one day a couple of years ago and Joe said, 'You know, nothing's really changed around here. People get mad, angry and excited about the same things that they did sixty years ago. They hate their stupid supervisor, love a comedy bit in a sequence they're doing, think so-and-so's boards are terrible. Everybody argues over the same subjects. 'There are new faces, but everything else is the same.'"

I was lucky enough to have lunch with Joe on occasion. Unlike those Disney puff pieces we often read, he really laid it on the line.

It was so refreshing to hear the truth from an old guy who truly knew what he was talking about.
