$100 Million

Crest Animation talks up its first 3-D feature release.

... "We expect the movie ["Alpha and Omega"] to earn an income of $100 million from all revenue streams including box office, home video and sale of satellite rights. The initial success of the movie has earned us credibility and could be a gamechanger for the Indian animation industry," says Crest Animation CEO AK Madhavan. ...

We don't know what Crest's break-even point is with their first CG long-form movie, but they are framing "Alpha and Omega" as an animated feature that's been a successful enterprise.

Ok, so far it has earned $31m at the BO after 6 weeks so far. From the looks of things it might not have opened up in some international markets yet, so let's give it an optimistic $18m more (based on the average assumption that the international market is roughly equal to the US domestic market).

With a BO total of $50m, are the other distribution channels (home video, satellite, etc.) really worth another $50m for a B grade animated feature? That seems like a lot to me.

You're right. The film really DID bomb:http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=alphaandomega.htm

$100 million in gross income, total, for all revenue streams might be in the ball park. Of course, that doesn't mean $100 million in profit, or even $100 million back to Crest. For example, of the $31 million it made in world-wide box office grosses, half of that goes to the theater chains, and another 10% to distributors, so Crest wouldn't even see $15 million of that money.

Congrats, they've earned it. They made a movie and put it out there. There should be more 20 million dollar American movies.

Well, it was better than astroboy. At least astroboy cost less to make (or looks like it).

I know when DreamWorks was going public, their financial disclosures showed that, on average, the worldwide box office accounted for about 25% of the gross take, DVD sales about 50%, and pay TV/merchandising/licensing the other 25%. DVD sales have been going down, but those percentages aren't out of line with what Crest is claiming. Still, they aren't claiming that the film made them a profit.

"Expect"?...They misspelled "Hope". ;)

The Astro Boy Hater strikes again!

Somehow, it's not surprising he prefers a dog (in every sense of the word) movie over something good.

Distribution fees are more in the 30-35% range, plus costs. And then there's the marketing costs that have to be recouped.

Hate to break it to ya, but theres much more than "one" Astro Boy hater.

Sure it is, if they define "successful" as "not flopping as hard as some other low-quality animated flicks have". I still haven't seen any of the merchandise they claimed to be making...

Check the ratings for "Astro Boy" at Yahoo Movies. A B+ from 1408 ratings. Check the ratings for the "Astro Boy" movie on Amazon - a site where people buy movies. 4 out of 5 stars from 50 reviews. Hate to break it to ya, but there are a lot of "Astro Boy" lovers out there too.

That's because astroboy was TRULY awful. No wonder audiences hated it and stayed away in droves.
