Not Art, But Commerce

The L.A. Times describes the reason for Cars 2:

... In the five years since its 2006 release, "Cars" has generated global retail sales approaching $10 billion, according to Disney. ...

Pretty much answers the age-old question: "Tell me again why we're making this?"

As does this:

[Robert Iger] expects "Cars 2" to drive consumer products sales through the holiday season, as well as to create anticipation for next summer's opening of a 12-acre Cars Land attraction at Disney California Adventure ...

Hmmm...no mention of Tangled consumer products or a "land" in the parks. Too bad Disney missed this opportunity with such a wonderful film.

and surprise surprise, Cars 2 is getting pretty good reviews so far.

Ah, the LA Times, always the playing up to the cynics in the audience when it comes to animation.

Indeed the sequel is better than the original and cheers to billions and billions from merchandising to fatten up Disney's bottom line.

It's early, and Rotten Tomatoes only has 12 reviews so far, but a 67% 'Fresh' rating is by far the lowest for a Pixar film ever. It already has 4 'Rotten' reviews out of 12. Compare that to 5 'Rotten' reviews out of 269 for Up and 3 'Rotten' reviews out of 250 for Toy Story 3.

Troll. Two things:

1) There is a Tangled themed land planned for the parks

2) Just because this article doesnt mention Tangled by name, it in no way means Tangled didnt rake in the merchandise dough. Dont make me post that financial report again.

Tell me this, if Tangled was such a failure, why did it make 600 mil worldwide, is the number 1 DVD (still) in America, and still to this day is filled to the brim with merchandise at Disney Stores and large retailers worldwide (Target/Walmart)

Explain that. Or shut up.

Really? US parks or is it meant for Shanghai?

Wow, one of the Disney cheerleaders is way oversensitive (or over-caffeinated). Chill down.

Nah. This same troll has been posting the same "tangled didnt make any money" themed comments on every Disney post for months now.

Its the Disney haters that need to calm down.

There is no "Tangled" themed anything at the parks. Just mushed together with other 'Princess' themed stuff...most likely a meet and greet spot. Nothing more.

2. Tangled didn't do that well with merchandising. Better than expected, but not as much as Disney wanted. I deal in facts......why can't you?

Because I'm the only one with numbers to back my position up.

And there's a Tangled attraction currently at Disneyland/disneyworld with more coming.

Why do you hate Disney so much. Seems like a good waste of rage

Greed is good.

And the critics seem to agree: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/cars_2/

Tangled before marketing and distribution cost $260m. making it the most expensive animated film ever made.

Duh. Welcome to last years discussion. Since then it's made it's money back, then turned a profit, became the number 1 DVD in America, made good coin in merchandising, and possibly most importantly, made the execs at disney hq trust wdas again. Good times.
