A Conversation with Andreas Deja -- Part I

Andreas Deja has been one of the leading lights of animation almost from the day he got off the plane at LAX and went to work at Walt Disney Productions ...

TAG Interview with Andreas Deja

Find all TAG Interviews on the TAG website at this link

Andreas grew up in Germany, and became enamored of Disney animated features the first time he laid eyes on Jungle Book. His love of the craft led him to art school and then a correspondence with Disney veteran Eric Larson. Soon thereafter, Eric invited Andreas to join Disney's training program.

The rest, as they say, is movie history, detailed in Clay Kaytis's 2005 interview with Andreas ... and here.

Besides being a really great talent, Andreas is also a great guy, very generous and a gentleman.
Many times he shared some of his great artwork collection by giving me and others, copies of it for us to enjoy and learn.
I am glad you guys took the time to interview him. This is great inspiration to all of us in the industry and to the students of animation.

I just wished he were a better actor. His drawings are ok, but his animation lacks spark and generally moves too much. Although I do admire his work on LILO and Stitch and Bambi 2.

Let's get an interview with Master Animator (and grat ACTOR) Glen Keane soon!

That's the funny thing about animators IN GENERAL...........they tend to get lost in the movement for movements sake, and allow the performance to kind of fall by the wayside.

Milt Kahl used to make things move too much as well
(remember those annoying head shakes he used over and over?).
Of course no one wants to admit that, as they'll be stoned to death in the village square.

Not to discredit Mr. Kahl. His acting was phenomenal.
He was right when he said he would have made a great actor.

I see. You admire Andreas's animation, except when you don't.

Regarding Glen Keane, you might want to click over to Animation Podcast. I believe Glen is interviewed there (as well as other places.)

So he draws "ok", his animation "lacks spark" and is "too slow"? Any shots you wanna take at Walt while you're at it? Once again the animation community proving they take a backseat to no one in their ability to "eat their own". Brilliant.

LOVED the interview BTW.

Yes, we are a cut throat bunch aren't we?

Especially those evil doers in the large facilities, where it's Dog Eat Dog all the way to the top.

They know who they are.

Awesome! Keep up the great interviews!

These interviews are always great to listen to. Looking forward to the 2nd and 3rd parts of the conversation.

Just two parts of Andreas' interview. The next one will be up tomorrow.

Steve, Andreas was also already interviewed on Animation Podcast. In fact, I think he may have been the first interviewee.

So, your point is..?

That we only have two parts of the conversation. The comment above implied they were looking forward to more than one part.

Hulett's point was pretty obvious to me. Someone said they wanted Steve to interview Glen Keane, and Steve pointed out that there was on on-line interview already available that they could go listen to right now. I took it that he was being helpful. The poster at 1:55pm obviously was looking a little too deeply into Hulett's response. Some people just seem to look for conflict, no matter how innocuous a comment is.

Yes I understand. Just wishful thinking asking for more parts to these interviews (particularly this one). :) Though I suppose I can just go to Animationpodcast for more. In any case, good work on the interviews and keep em coming.

I'm looking forward to hearing the interview he did for Animation Podcast as well.

We're lining up some interesting ones now. Should be a fun summer!

Loved the interview. Can't wait to hear the rest tommorrow. Thank you for posting this.

Steven, my comment was directed at Steve H, who seemed to be saying that Glenn can be heard elsewhere. My point is/was that so can Andreas.

Sorry for the confusion.

Ahh, understood. So many Steve's at 839. Apologies for my part of the confusion as well.

Cheers!

Maybe Mr. Keane will be amenable to a future interview.

We'll see.

Btw, Steve: He's a SULTAN.

Of course he is. I don't know what came over me.
