The Comments

As promised in the comment threads, I brought up the Very Important Topic of the Comments Conundrum with the Animation Guild Executive Board last night, and here is the board's thinking:

Fine the way it is.

I know some here are just driven to distraction with the anonymity, the unprofessionalism, the care-free flaming that sometimes goes on, but here's my take:

If people don't like the comments, don't read them. The staff and I will, from time to time, delete horrid and unseemly remarks, but new comments aren't moderated so they will stay up for a bit, even if they are ghastly. (One board member thought we shouldn't do ANY moderating, just let the good times roll.)

However. There will be some monitoring, though it will be light. People around here have other duties besides moderating comments on a medium-sized blog.

That's all for now. Carry on.

Yay for anonymous commenting!

I think it is essential in this business. We can comment and ask for advice without fear.

As for the trolls, people need to grow up and stop being so 'sensitive'. They should just ignore them.

Thank you. Freedom of opinion and freedom speech has won the day.

Ditto! No fear of professional damage or reprisals for unpopular opinion. Yay for freedom of speech!

For me, it was never a question of anonymity, it was keeping non-union people from commenting. Make it a registration-required site (with an email the union recognizes) but still allow anonymous posting (even if its not a Disney, Dreamworks, Nickelodeon email).

Not sure if anyone knows this, but this blog is a source (on Slashfilm, IMDB, and others) for the animation news rumor-mill, which drives obnoxious fans (haters and lovers alike) here to troll and/or flame-bait in the comments.

It's annoying (for me) to hear people pretend they are studio employees, and spread false information about studios as if they are in the know. I guess that isnt that big of a deal, since people who ARE in the know, know a lie when they see it.

But, whatever. Its no big deal I guess.

Although I comment with the assumption you know who we are (technologies have a way of getting into our hands), my over-the-top attitude is only a reflection of the writing prose of whom I am responding to.....

therefore, you are welcome to take it personally, and I know you do by the gasket you blow. However, if you are cunning enough not to take it personally, then by looking at what I am responding to shall further give you insight into youself.

In other words, you cant see me but I can you.

And this pretty much sums it up.

Yep , it's obviously just "Fine the way it is".

The wankers rule here. Thank you 839 Board.

Clearly, anonymous posting allows for obstreperous and even blasphemous voices to be heard. But I think that whatever one has to say, have the guts to say it with your own name attached.

My rule of thumb: If the comment is anonymous, I don't take it seriously.

In fact, I hardly take it at all.

And as usual, people abuse the system.

Anonymous said...

I...think they were abusing the system to prove a (valid) point

I say we all use the Honor System! Who's with me!?

Oh haw! I've tossed the dart and hit the bullseye in the center. I've seen others do it as well. Must be because you're a lucky guy?

"And why do these anonymous people want kitty cats to mouthe penises?"

Where's YOUR mind? I clearly had the fun idea of of a detective sucking on a puddy-tat (and NOT a puddy wee wee). I swear! I cant speak for the other guy, but.....if he'd like to meet up in a dark alley sometime, hee hee!

what?

My only reasoning for wanting some sort of better system is simply to help figure out which anonymous is which.

It's hard to tell if a given anonymous is the same anonymous that I was conversing with earlier. Makes for confusing posting.

I have no problem at all with the content of any comments here, or with the desire to remain completely anonymous.

It's pretty well known most professionals consider this site and the comments a joke anyways.

Thanks Animation Guild for representing us!

Entirely welcome, Anonymous.

Anonymous is good but it is a relative state of existence. Say for example that you post your comments from a particular flavor of computer. And also say, for examples sake, that one of the big animation powerhouses had on its Board (until quite recently) the person who invented that flavor of computer. Anonymity in this case would be of a somewhat lesser degree than you may wish for.

If you're deep enough into this business of ours, you can read the comments/rumors with enough inside knowledge to separate the wheat from the chaff.

If you are looking to get INTO the biz and read this site, caveat emptor.

(Comment above)

The stupid part is making the leap that the REASON for joining a Board would be to snoop on this blog.

The snooping part is quite easy, Board member or not.

there's so many reason to keep your comments anonymous...one of them is that the animation industry is full of inmature douchebags that can threaten your carreer prospects if you state your frank opinion on something.
And those who insist on putting some kind of control mechanism seem to me to be suffering from control issues. I suggest go see a shrink.
