So are animation directors going to "dominate" live action?
... [Andrew] Stanton seems to have found the perfect project for his first live action debut, and one, which he has, a personal passion for. The plot plays to his strengths, surrounding the adventures of John Cater, a civil war vet lost in space after being transported to Mars, and to a wide new world.
It's certainly true that the dividing lines between live action and animation have been melting away. (Avatar? Harry Potter? Terminators? Smurfs?)
But come on. Animation directors will now be ruling the film world? Why don't we all take a deep breath and wait until John Carter of Mars actually comes out?
...The studio is so confident in Andrew Stanton's $250 million sci-fi epic "John Carter" that it is releasing the film in the soft month of March. But response to the movie's trailers has not been strong. ...
$250 million is a lot of production cost to climb over. You need to rake in mucho dinero before you reach the break-even point. Or so I've been told.

Not to mention both Hollywood Reporter and Variety, as well as Nikki Finke have reported the final budget of John Carter is closer to $340 million. A lot of that had to do with the 3D conversion. This was all brought to light when Disney balked at the new Lone Ranger budget.
If the trailers are any clue, heads will roll at Disney when it flops.
Maybe it should be retitled "Mars Needs John Carter."
The Avatar trailer was bad too. Not saying JCOM looks good, but sometimes trailers aint good. Tangled trailer sucked too.
The heads that green lit this disaster at Disney have already rolled.
Disney can't catch a break lately. They really are over due fo a breakout hit.
Andrew Stanton is so full of himself that part of me is looking forward to John Carter tanking. On the other hand, he's a talented guy, and even though he's never been able to sustain a good film from start to finish, I'd hate to see an epic bomb end his career. Not that it will. He'll likely be directed Finding Nemo 2 once the wounds heal.
Here's another possibility...that it may be a hit.
just sayin'
el diablo
I know I'm in the minority here, but I never thought Stanton's films were "great." Wall-E was OK up till Act III, and Finding Nemo's paper-thin story left me unsatisfied.
I do not like the look of the John Carter trailer. Not only does it rip off Attack of the Clones, but it reminds me too much of Prince of Persia. The aliens are laughably similar to the Grand Councilwoman from Lilo and Stitch.
I'm not in the animation business, so can only know Stanton by his work. And it impresses the hell out of me. I think he has a good sense for what works emotionally and what draws people to characters. And he has a great feel for what works in humor. Wall-E gets much deserved credit for the jaw-dropping opening 30 minutes. And a lot of what makes the scenes with Wall-E and Eve so incredible is the funny mannerisms and reactions from Wall-E. It's so freaking perfect. Based on things I've read and seen from John Carter, I think Stanton has done it again. John Carter is gonna be a character we strongly sympathize with and are gonna root like crazy for. In the quick ape-fighting scene in the trailer, you can already see that Stanton is gonna insert some humor into the movie to keep it fun. And the Woola dog creature, I bet, is gonna be a crowd-pleaser. I cannot wait to see the film and think it's gonna be one of the top films of the year.
