David Weidman original serigraphs, 1963-1979
At ninety-one, David Weidman is excited to have a new exhibition of his original vintage serigraphs at the Animation Guild. The limited edition serigraphs, all hand signed, will be on display from October 5-26 at Gallery 839.
David will be present to sign his book (now out of print) “The Whimsical Works of David Weidman” from 6 to 8 pm on October 5 only. Also at the opening we will feature some of the lesser known pieces in the portfolio.
David worked as a background painter in the animation world of the 50s and 60s, painting backgrounds for Mr. Magoo, Crusader Rabbit, Fractured Fairy Tales and many others.
David created his works directly on the screen, not using any intermediary mediums to develop a new body of work that constitutes a world of Whimsy unique to Weidman. This exhibit will feature the evolution of his use of the medium from the early works that resemble the fanciful animation backgrounds to the layered later works that show off the medium to best advantage.
The lacquer based inks (no longer available) still retain their vibrancy and his layouts and orchestration have stood the test of time. Enjoying a resurgence of interest, his work has been featured in the Los Angeles Times, on the set of Mad Men, Urban Outfitters licensed products and more.
Please visit his site for a preview at www.weidmansart.com or call (626) 737-9704. Gallery 839 is located at 1105 N. Hollywood Way in Burbank.
